Our immune system is meant to act as our protective shield. Our main defense system against external stimuli and invading pathogens.

A healthy immune system is crucial. But what happens when it doesn’t work properly?

In my post this week, I’ll share why turmeric is a natural immune booster and why ayurveda for the immune system is so crucial to overall health and well being.

Ayurveda for The Immune System

There has been an increasing amount of research and studies on ayurveda for the immune system. Specifically, the Indian traditional practice of Rasayana, also known as the brand of ayurveda that helps promote longevity, intelligence, and the enhancement of the immune system [1].

Medicinal herbs have not only been studied for their immunomodulatory activity, but they are also known to be antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antifungal and more.

Although there are various herbs that provide these properties, turmeric has become increasingly popular for its immune boosting effects, as well as its anti-inflammatory properties.

Turmeric: A Natural Immune Booster

Turmeric has become promoted within the modern world as a super-ingredient for its role in healing inflammation, chronic pain and digestive issues.

This powerful root is special because of its medically active compound known as curcumin. This compound contains both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which help:

  • Lower stress and inflammation
  • Improve circulation and digestion
  • Fight chronic age related diseases–like arthritis
  • Lower the risk of heart disease

Curcumin has proven to be beneficial for the immune system, as it can help replicate the activation of cells (lymphocytes, macrophages, and neutrophils) and help defend our body from viruses, bacterial and foreign pathogens.

It also helps boost the functionality of a molecule known as cathelicidin that is responsible in defending the immune system against bacterial, viral and fungal infections [2].

It is no wonder that the modern world is beginning to acknowledge Turmeric as a natural immune booster.

Immune Support Supplements

Although there are a number of ways to ingest turmeric and relish in the benefits of curcumin, this compound can actually be quite difficult to absorb.

This is because curcumin dissolves in fat rather than in water. Unfortunately, our digestive system is mostly water, so our body actually excrete this powerful herb instead.

Studies have shown that piperine (black pepper) can be mixed with curcumin to deliver proper absorption. In fact, when combined with the piperine found in black pepper, absorption rates increased by 2000% [3].

So, what are the best immune booster supplements?

Opting for a natural immune support supplement like our Turmeric Gold will allow you to absorb the immune supporting benefits of curcumin. This formula also helps treat and prevent inflammation caused by a weakened immune system.

In addition to this supplement, I also recommend opting for our Immune Booster that provides not only curcumin’s many health benefits, but also bromelain. This powerful enzyme when mixed with curcumin helps alleviate inflammation and ward off disease and illness by boosting the immune system. It can also lower the risk of viral and bacterial infections.

This supplement also contains Vitamin B6, which is vital to supporting biochemical reactions in the immune system. A Vitamin B deficiency can prevent healthy red blood cells from delivering oxygen to your body's tissues (anemia), confusion, depression and a weakened immune system.

In order to properly support immune function, you’ll also want to make sure that you’re getting adequate sleep, as well as alleviating any tension or stress from your body.

Various studies have shown that adequate sleep and reducing stress levels help strengthen our immune systems. In fact, sleep and the circadian system have been proven to be strong regulators of the immune system [4].

For this reason, I strongly recommend opting for a sleep supplement like our Deep Sleep that blends, melatonin and magnesium to help the body relax and encourages deep REM sleep.

Lastly, reducing physical and mental stress can help strengthen the immune system, as well as promote proper thyroid function and reduce the effects of depression and anxiety. This Stress Relief + Ashwagandha utilizes several other supportive herbs like Vidari, Bala and Amla that help restore energy, boost strength and strengthen immunity.
